Elegant Hand-Blown Glass Creatures Come To Life By Scott Bisson
Oregon-based artist Scott Bisson is passionate about glass blowing,
and his passion clearly shows through the hand-blown glass creatures he
brings to life.
Many of his creations portray aquatic creatures and amphibians, as
their natural shape is perfectly resembled by the flowing qualities of
molten glass.
Bisson unexpectedly fell in love with glass blowing back in high
school during a chemistry class. He bent a glass tube over a Bunsen
burner and realized how much he could do with heat and glass. From that
moment on he was hooked.
Since his high school days, Bisson has continued to work on perfecting
his art by working with a number of professional tutors. His mentors
clearly saw his talents growing as they would watch him expertly shape
and twist molten glass into incredible creations.
Bisson is both creative and energetic; he is always working to challenge
himself in new ways. He wrote on his website, “If I don’t lose a piece a
day from getting in over my head, then I am not pushing myself hard
enough.”
Bisson has studied under five different masters, including the
world-renowned Pilchuck School with Robert A. Mickelson. Over the years
he has also met and observed Dante Marioni, Peter Novotney and William
Morris.
Scott works with both blown and flameworked glass, which are two very
different mediums requiring unique sets of skills. His flameworked
pieces are incredibly life-like and include frogs, geckos and more.
Bisson uses a blowpipe to create his larger pieces, such as paperweights
and pitchers.
No matter what Bisson creates, he believes the only way to produce his
very best work is by using energy and excitement. He said, “Skill is the
raw material of a great piece, and drive and energy make it take
shape.”
